Gaylord Perry Autographed Collection (44)

Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $705.00

Collection of forty-four Gaylord Perry signed items once residing in the famed Barry Halper Collection. Barry was particularly good friends with Gaylord, who especially enjoyed that Barry would have the nerve to occasionally present Gaylord with a jar of Vaseline to sign in honor of the great pitcher's reputation for using this substance as one of the tools of his trade as a spit ball pitcher. Perry, of course, for years engaged in a never-ending cat-and-mouse game with umpires and opposing managers who tried to catch him using foreign substances on baseballs. Constantly tugging on his uniform and cap and sleeves and glove, he was impossible to catch, and even when he wasn't doing anything to the ball, he psyched out the opposition to the tune of 314 career wins. 1) Gaylord Perry peanut poster. The poster, issued by the Gaylord Perry Peanut Farm, features a picture of Perry on the mound, above which the banner reads “Sold Here – Gaylord Perry Peanuts.” It is inscribed by Perry in blue Sharpie (“10”): “To Barry – It’s been great seeing all the great baseball items. I’m happy to have my peanut poster here. Thanks. Gaylord Perry.” The poster (10 x 15 inches) is printed on light cardboard stock. The reverse displays both tape remnants and light surface paper loss from having once been removed from an album page, otherwise Ex. 2) Empty canvas bag (6 x 11 inches) that once housed two pounds of Gaylord Perry Peanuts. It’s inscribed on the front in blue marker (“9”): “To my buddy Barry – Best Wishes – Gaylord Perry.” Ex. 3) 15-ounce jar of Vaseline inscribed by Perry in blue marker (“3”) on the reverse: “To Barry – This great stuff is for gloves – Gaylord Perry.” Vg. 4) 7.5-ounce jar of Vaseline signed on the front of the cap by Perry in black marker (“4”) and inscribed by him on the reverse of the cap in blue marker (“7"): “This stuff is great!!” Vg. 5-25) Twenty-one identical souvenir pamphlets distributed to fans by the Seattle Mariners on May 15, 1982, in commemoration of “Gaylord Perry Night.” Each of the fold-over pamphlets has been signed by Perry in blue marker (“9/10”) on the front. One of the pamphlets (5 x 8.5 inches) displays light discoloration, otherwise all are Ex-Mt. 26-44) Nineteen identical souvenir certificates (11 x 18.5 inches) issued to fans by the Seattle Mariners following Gaylord Perry’s 300th win on May 6, 1982.
