Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris Limited-Edition Signed Bat Personalized to Barry Halper (#1/115)
Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $14,100.00
Presented here is perhaps the finest Mantle/Maris signed bat one could ever hope to obtain, especially given its special provenance. This extremely rare limited-edition signed H&B bat was produced in 1984 to commemorate the historic 1961 season enjoyed by the famed “M&M Boys.” The unique design of the bat features both players’ facsimile signatures stamped, respectively, on either side of the barrel, below which are listed their home run totals for the 1961 season. Only 115 of these bats were ever produced and the well-documented signing of them by Mantle and Maris was considered an historic event at the time. This bat differs significantly, however, from all of the other 114 bats issued. This is the very first bat produced for that signing and is specially stamped “Limited Edition 1 of 115." It was then presented to Barry Halper by Mantle and Maris. Instead of simply signing the bat, like the others, each player added a personal inscription. Maris has written “To Barry – The No. 1 collector from the No. 1 Home run King. Best Always – Roger Maris. " Mantle has inscribed the other side: “To Barry – Best Wishes – Mickey Mantle.” Both the inscriptions and signatures have been penned in blue Sharpie and grade a perfect “10.” The fact that it is personalized to Barry Halper as a special presentation piece, combined with its status as the number-one bat produced of the edition, defines this as the ultimate Mantle/Maris signed limited-edition bat, and a unique and extremely significant Mantle/Maris signed piece. This bat was understandably a very special item to Barry, and one which he never considered parting with during the initial offering of his collection in 1999. Length: 35 inches. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $14,100.00
