Mickey Mantle "Obscene Language" Signed Prints (2)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $3,231.25
Mickey Mantle had a great sense of humor and Barry Halper always enjoyed a good joke, even at his own expense. That fact is evident when one looks upon these two signed pieces, each of which features an "off-color" inscription by Mantle addressed to Barry. Mantle probably signed thousands of items for Barry over the years, but every so often he couldn't resist the temptation of writing something simply outrageous just to see Barry's reaction. These two pieces represent some of his tamer comments. The first is a 1969 advertisement for Afrin, a nasal decongestant. The piece features a full-length photo of Mantle in uniform, next to which he has inscribed the piece in black Sharpie, "Hey Barry - You should try some Afrin for that snoot of yours - A** hole - Mickey Mantle." Both the inscription and signature grade "9." The advertisement (17.5 x 35.5 inches) displays a few light creases and is in Very Good condition. Framed to slightly larger dimensions. The second piece is a 1987 art print by S. Rini that features illustrations of Mantle, Whitey Ford and Billy Martin posing together against the backdrop of Yankee Stadium. Each player has signed the piece in blue Sharpie across his image. However, along the top Mantle has further added "To Barry F**k you, you A**hole." All three signatures and Mantle's inscription grade "10." The print (16.5 x 22.5 inches) appears to be dry mounted to a cardboard backing, the process of which has resulted in a number of minor creases and ripples throughout. Very Good condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 23 x 29 inches. Needless to say, few other collectors can boast such Mantle signed pieces in their collection and the fact that Mantle would write these things, and that Barry would keep them, was evidence of Mantle's legendary off-color sense of humor and a true indication of their close friendship. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 2 signed prints. Reserve $200. Reserve $400/$600. SOLD FOR $3,231.25
