1958 Mickey Mantle Signed Record Album Cover

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $2,937.50

Presented is one of Barry Halper's all-time favorite Mantle signed pieces and one that was always displayed very prominently in his collection. The item is a record album cover for the 1958 RCA Victor recording titled "My Favorite Hits - Mickey Mantle." The album cover itself is rare and has great appeal for collectors as it features a color photo of Mantle posing in his classic batting stance at Yankee Stadium. Its rarity and aesthetic qualities notwithstanding, Barry loved it because he always got a kick out of reading what Mantle inscribed to him on the cover: "To Barry - You should here [sic] me sing! - Mickey Mantle." Both the inscription and signature have been scripted in silver Sharpie and grade a perfect "10." This album cover was always a featured stop whenever Barry gave personal tours of his collection. One of the humorous side "notes" regarding this piece, as offered by Barry, was that when he gave Mantle the cover to sign, Mickey confessed to him that he didn't even know half the songs on the album. Just as amusing is the fact that Mantle had no explanation for the quote on the back cover as stating that "next to sports, he has been more interested in pop music than anything else." Fortunately, Mantle kept his day job and went on to have one of the most celebrated careers in the history of baseball. This is truly a unique Mantle signed piece and one that is accompanied by the special provenance of having been a "favorite hit" of Barry's as well. The album cover (12 x 12 inches) displays a few tiny creases and a few scattered light abrasions. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 15.25 x 15.25 inches. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
