The Tiger Wore Spikes Signed by Ty Cobb
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $4,700.00
Hardcover first edition of The Tiger Wore Spikes by John McCallum (A. S. Barnes and Company, New York, 1956), signed by Ty Cobb on the front flyleaf. Cobb's signature has been beautifully scripted in blue ink, grading a "9/10." This book was signed by Cobb at the 1957 Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Above Cobb's signature is a printed notation (not in Cobb's hand) that reads "Cooperstown, N. Y. - July 21, 1957." Cobb was a frequent guest at Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, though the 1957 event would be one of his last. Cobb passed away just four years later and those final years of his life were marked by increasingly poor health. This book, referred to on the cover as "an informal biography of Ty Cobb" surely pleased Cobb (it was written with his cooperation), as it appears to be a "sugarcoated" narrative of his life on and off the field. Though Ty Cobb lived much longer than Ruth, Cobb-signed biographies are considerably rarer. The 240-page book (6 x 8.5 inches) displays a store sticker on the front flyleaf and a pencil notation on the interior back cover; it is otherwise in Near Mint condition. The book is complete with its original dust jacket (Good condition, with a number of minor tears, one of which has been repaired with tape). From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $4,700.00
