Extremely Rare Circa 1956 Mickey Mantle Milk Carton
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $3,818.75
Over the years ballplayers have endorsed just about every product imaginable. Offered is an incredibly rare, possibly unique, 1950s milk carton featuring Mickey Mantle. This half-gallon milk carton, produced by the Meadow Sweet All-Star Dairies of Eire, Kansas, pictures Mantle in uniform on a side panel, above which appears the simple printed endorsement "Mickey Mantle’s Favorite Milk." This is the only example of this rare package design that we have ever seen. It may be the only example in the world. At the very least it is without question one of the rarest of all Mantle endorsement pieces. A copyright notice on the container is dated 1956. Its rarity is certainly understandable given the nature of the product. Its hard to imagine anyone saving a milk carton at all, even one with Mickey Mantle's image. That this one carton remains in its complete, original state is even more amazing. The company certainly chose a good summer to have Mantle endorse their milk. The Yankees' young slugger enjoyed a breakout season in 1956, winning both the Triple Crown and MVP Award while leading the Yankees to their fourth World Championship of the decade. The carton (3.75 x 3.75 x 10 inches) shows general wear but displays beautifully. The panel with Mantle’s photo is in Excellent condition overall and retains all of its original visual appeal. From the Barry Halper Collection. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $3,818.75
