Two Circa 1953 Mickey Mantle Signed Japanese Periodicals

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,527.50

Barry Halper was always on the lookout for unique Mantle items and, by virtue of his vast network of hobby contacts, he sometimes added unusual items from all over the world. Offered here are two extremely rare Mickey Mantle signed pieces originating from Japan. The first is the front page of the October 20, 1953, edition of The Mainichi , which pictures Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra presenting a ball to Japan’s Crown Prince prior to a game. Both Mantle and Berra have signed the piece in blue ink across their respective images. Mantle’s signature grades “10,” while Berra’s grades “8” due to a small tear that affects the “Y” in “Yogi.” The page (9.25 x 13.5 inches) has a few edge tears, including a four-inch horizontal tear extending from the lower left border, and some minor creasing, but displays very well. Overall in Good to Very Good condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 14.5 x 18.75 inches. The second piece is a Japanese magazine that features an illustration of Mantle . It has been inscribed in blue marker (“8”), “Mickey Mantle – Japanese ball player!” All of the text on the cover is in Japanese and the piece is in apparent Excellent condition (beautifully framed, possibly cover only) . Matted and framed to total dimensions of 14 x 17.5 inches. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 2 items. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,527.50
