1935 Babe Ruth Signed Photo Including the Signatures of Al Jolson, John Barrymore and Others

Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $4,112.50

Presented is a Babe Ruth original signed photograph that is unique in that it has been signed not only by Ruth, but also by a number of legendary stage and screen personalities. The photo features Ruth in uniform and has been boldly inscribed by him in black fountain pen across his image: “To Kay – My best wishes – Babe Ruth.” Ruth’s signature has been flawlessly rendered, grading a perfect “10,” and it contrasts beautifully against the white background of his uniform. It is not known who “Kay” was, but she obviously was involved in the world of show business in some capacity, as the photo has also been signed in black fountain pen by a number of Hollywood’s greatest actors. The signatures of both John Barrymore (“8”) and his sister Ethel Barrymore (“9,” a portion of her signature contrasts poorly against the dark background) appear directly below Ruth’s inscription, as does the signature of Christy Walsh (“8/9”), who was Ruth’s agent and business manager. The photo has also been signed by the legendary Al Jolson (“8/9”) in the upper left corner, above which appears the printed notation “April 29, 1935 Radio City,” and film comedienne Polly Moran (“7”), who has inscribed it “To Kay – Best – Polly Moran” in the upper right corner. The photograph was most likely signed at a movie or theater premiere held at Radio City Music Hall (based upon the notation above Jolson’s signature). This is an exceptional and unique Ruth signed photograph which Barry Halper chose to keep because it is both a stunning wall display and conversation piece. The photo (8 x 10 inches) has a few light creases (many can only be seen when viewed at certain angles) as well as a small tear. While the photo is technically in Very Good condition, it projects as Excellent and has been handsomely matted and framed to total dimensions of 14.5 x 16.5 inches. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $4,112.50
