1938 Johnny Vander Meer Signed Photo and Commemorative Pendant

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $470.00

Johnny Vander Meer's name will forever be remembered by baseball fans due to his incredible accomplishment of tossing back-to-back no-hitters in 1938. Vander Meer, while pitching for the Cincinnati Reds, no-hit the Boston Bees at home on June 11th. He then duplicated that feat against the Dodgers at Ebbets Field on June 15th. His second no-hitter was especially noteworthy as it also took place during the first night game in Brooklyn history. Presented here are two Johnny Vander Meer pieces, one of which is signed, relating to his epic feat. 1) The first is a large 13 x 10-inch photo of Vander Meer posing in the dugout with Babe Ruth following his second no-hitter. Vander Meer has inscribed the photo to Barry Halper in blue Sharpie ("10"): "To Barry - Me and the Babe after my 2nd No Hitter June 15-38. Where were you. Your pal Johnny Vander Meer." The photo, which displays a "Dispatch Photo News Service" logo in the lower right corner, is in Excellent to Mint condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 19.25 x 16.75 inches. 2) The second item is a pendant hanging from a decorative red/white/blue ribbon. The metal pendant is designed in the shape of a plaque and displays a baseball on the front. "Vander Meer Day" is inscribed along the top, while the year, "38," is inscribed at the base. Probably, this pin was issued as a keepsake to commemorate a special 1938 ceremony honoring Vander Meer's historic accomplishment that year. The pin (approximately 1.5 x 3 inches) displays light wear including minor tarnishing to the pendant. It is housed in its original box bearing an interior label on the underside of the lid for "Fred Stork Jewelers - New York." From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 2 items (photo and pin). Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $470.00
