Circa 1920s Winchester Baseball Advertising Store Displays (2)

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $2,610.00

How many times have collectors wistfully gazed upon a period advertising display and said to themselves that as nice as the piece is, from a collecting standpoint it would be great to have the actual products featured in the ad as well. Offered here are two period cardboard advertising displays, produced by the Winchester Arms Co., that are accompanied by two of the items prominently pictured in one of the pieces. The advertising displays are very substantial, designed for prominent store use, each measuring an impressive 18 x 40 inches. Among the many fine baseball items depicted in the first colorful promotion are three types of gloves, a catcher's mask, a ball (guaranteed 27 innings), a bat and a pair of cleats. This lot is accompanied by both a Winchester brand bat and catcher's mitt, identical to those featured in the store display. The bat, which measures 34 inches in length, bears the Winchester trademark logo on the center brand and features the phrase "Super Quality" stamped on the barrel. It should be noted that the model number of this bat is different from that in the display; otherwise, all of the manufacturer's stampings are identical. The right-handed catcher's glove displays the Winchester trade mark stamped on the front as well as a cloth manufacturer's tag on the reverse. The second display piece promotes the company's line of bats and balls, displaying five examples of each. Aside from some light border wear and a few minor abrasions to the second piece, the displays are in Excellent condition overall, with all of the colors remaining bold and bright. The bat exhibits heavy use and has a small indentation through the center brand which has been filled in with wood putty. The glove is well worn with some cracking to the leather in the area of the pocket. It should be noted that despite the use to both the bat and glove, each still present beautifully and are ideal for display, especially in combination with the original store advertisements. This is a highly desirable grouping of Winchester items that will appeal to both baseball and Winchester Arms Co. collectors. Total 4 items (two signs, one bat, one glove). Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,610.00
