Original Charles Conlon "Black Sox" Photograph Collection (7)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,204.00
Six of the primary conspirators in the 1919 "Black Sox" scandal are represented in this collection of seven original photographs taken by legendary baseball photographer Charles Conlon. Six of the photos capture individual on-field images of the conspirators while the seventh pictures the man responsible for their lifetime banishment, Kenesaw Mountain Landis. The player photos offered here are of Eddie Cicotte, Swede Risberg, Fred McMullin, Hap Felsch, Buck Weaver, and Lefty Williams. All of the photos, which have the appearance of a matched set, measure 8 x 10 inches and bear Conlon's handwritten name and/or credit stamp on the reverse. The names of the respective players are also written on the reverse in pencil (these are vintage notations). Both the Landis and Felsch photos originate from The Baseball Magazine archives and feature a hologram label on the reverse denoting their provenance. A few of the photos are dated on the reverse; however, all appear to have been taken between the years 1915 through 1917, with the exception of the Landis photo (1933 World Series). All of the photos display a number of minor condition flaws common to working press photos including, but not limited to, minor creasing, edge wear and editorial markings and/or outlining. Very Good condition overall with the exception of the Weaver photo, which has a very heavy vertical crease (not affecting the central image) near the left border which breaks the surface of the photo (Gd). This is an extraordinary collection of original "Black Sox" photographs from the most highly acclaimed master of the art of baseball photography. Total: 7 photos. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $2,204.00
