1888 E223 G & B Gum Buffington
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $7,540.00
Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. Extraordinary G & B sample, one of the most impressive examples we have ever seen, of Philadelphia's pitcher Charles Buffington (Buffinton). This card has been downgraded by SGC due to an extremely insignificant and slight tape stain on the blank reverse and would otherwise grade Near Mint (or better) condition. This is a simply outstanding card: extremely bright and clean, with absolutely flawless contrast, strong corners, and an incredibly strong overall visual appeal. G & Bs just don't come any nicer looking than this one. In addition, this card is a photographic portrait variety, which is the most desirable type in the eyes of most collectors (G & Bs were also issued featuring woodcut "line drawing" illustrations). Their small size (1 x 2.25 inches) and the fact that G & B's were issued with gum as opposed to tobacco make this set one of the most distinctive of all pre-1900 baseball card issues. G & Bs are also one of the rarest of all nineteenth-century issues. This is a world-class sample from one of card collecting's most interesting, highly regarded, and elusive sets. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $7,540.00
