1956 PM15 "Yellow Basepath" High-Grade PSA Collection (10)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,900.00
Collection of ten PM15 "Yellow Basepath" pins, with six pins grading MINT 9 by PSA and four pins grading NM-MT 8 by PSA. This is an exceptional high-quality collection of these very popular 1950s pinbacks, including seven Hall of Famers. The collection includes the following (with grades in parenthesis): Luis Aparicio (NM-MT 8), Ernie Banks (MINT 9), Yogi Berra (MINT 9), Bob Friend (NM-MT 8), Ted Greengrass (NM-MT 8), Al Kaline (MINT 9), Dale Long (NM-MT 8), Ed Mathews (MINT 9), Stan Musial (MINT 9) and Pee Wee Reese (MINT 9). High-grade examples of PM15 Yellow Basepath pins are particularly rare because, like all litho pins (as opposed to celluloid pins), they are extremely condition-sensitive. Litho pins are very susceptible to scratches because their designs are printed directly onto the metal, as opposed to being printed on paper and encased under a protective celluloid covering, as is the case with celluloid pinbacks. This condition sensitivity makes the condition of these examples all the more noteworthy. Pins are just beginning to be graded. It will be interesting to see how the market will evolve in the years to come for examples in the highest grades from the most popular baseball pinback sets. The complete set of PM15 "Yellow Basepath" pins numbers only 32, thus they are far rarer than Topps and Bowman cards of the era. Issued in 1956, these popular pins were dispensed by bubble-gum machines placed in five-and-dime stores and at supermarkets. Diameter of each: 7/8 inch. Total 10 pins. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $2,900.00
