1983 "50th Anniversary of the All-Star Game" Ring Presented to Lefty Gomez
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $696.00
On July 5, 1983 Vernon "Lefty" Gomez traveled back to Comiskey Park in Chicago, fifty years following his starting and winning the first All-Star game as the starting pitcher for the American League in this same park in 1933. Gomez joined over eighty former All-Star participants who had all gathered to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the All-Star Game. Major League Baseball presented Gomez and other former all-stars who took part in the ceremonies that day with a special commemorative All-Star ring. Offered is the ring presented to Lefty Gomez on that special occasion. The 10K gold ring (size 10) is set with a raised pink stone. Engraved on one shank is "All Star 1933" and on the other, "Baseball." A ball and flag emblem is engraved directly above the word "Baseball." The initials "VG" (Vernon Gomez) are engraved on the interior. While Gomez did not participate on the field in the Old Timers Reunion All-Star Game, his presence there was particularly special as the starting pitcher for the American League in 1933. That inaugural contest was certainly a memorable one for Gomez. In addition to earning the win for the American League that day, he also drove in the game's first run, scoring Jimmie Dykes with a single in the second inning. There were no All-Star rings presented in 1933, so this special ring is the only ring ever presented to Lefty Gomez in honor of his participation in the 1933 All-Star contest. The ring is in Excellent condition overall, with a few areas of surface wear. This is a unique All-Star Game ring issued to one of its most famous participants. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000.
