1888 N172 Old Judge Dummy Hoy

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,770.00

Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. We grade this card Ex-Mt. This is an absolutely stunning 1888 N172 Old Judge of Dummy Hoy (fielding, bending knees pose). Extremely attractive and outstanding in all respects, with exceptional contrast, an unusually pronounced photo border, and with advertising and player identification typesetting crisper and stronger than usually seen on Old Judge cards. Extremely bright and clean on the front, with particularly strong photo contrast and detail to both Hoy and the extremely elaborate studio backdrop, no creases, and only the lightest touch of even corner wear. The only reason this card has been downgraded from EX-MT by SGC is because of the light pencil notations on the reverse regarding Hoy's career in the hand of legendary collector Buck Barker. Buck Barker was one of hobby's founding fathers and one of the premier collectors from the 1930s through the 1960s. This card was once a part of Buck Barker's collection. To us, Buck Barker's notations give this card a very special and significant provenance that makes this a much more desirable card than if it had no notations, but we do understand that SGC seriously downgrades all cards with pen or pencil notations on the reverse. Without reference to the neat, light pencil notations on the reverse, the card is in Ex-Mt condition and (as can easily be seen) has simply outstanding eye appeal, all things considered as impressive as any Dummy Hoy Old Judge card we have seen. This is a magnificent and extremely high-quality Old Judge of Dummy Hoy, worthy as a highlight in the finest collection of Old Judges or world-class collection of high-grade nineteenth-century baseball cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,770.00
