1930s Home Run King Mechanical Toy With Original Box
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $928.00
Inspired but not formally endorsed by Babe Ruth, this colorful tin windup toy, manufactured by Selrite, is designed to rotate and hit balls as they pop up out of the tee. The green base features illustrated game scenes along the sides, while the top resembles a diamond. The toy displays beautifully but is not in working order (the key turns, but the batter no longer rotates) and the bat has separated from one of the figure's hands (bat is still attached to the other hand). The original balls are not included. The mechanical toy is in Very Good to Excellent condition, displaying normal wear consistent with use. While this toy has long been popular with collectors, it is the survival and condition of the original box which truly distinguishes this particular example. The box (7 x 4 x 4 inches) remains in a remarkable state of preservation given its age and fragile nature, with its only flaws consisting of a few small tears along each flap. Conservatively graded Ex-Mt; one would be hard pressed to find a better example. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $928.00
