Circa 1948 Babe Ruth Figural Radio
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,610.00
Although familiar in form, this Babe Ruth figural radio is much scarcer than the nearly identically designed Babe Ruth electric desk clocks produced in the 1940s. Like its more common cousin, the offered radio is also produced by Abbotwares and features a large bust of Ruth displayed on the top. Flanking the bust are two baseballs, on which are recorded his single-season and lifetime home run records, respectively. A station knob and volume control knob are located on the front panel. The Ruth electric clocks were originally offered as top prizes in a baseball punch board game, circa 1948 (they were probably offered for sale as well), and it is most likely that this piece also represented a similar prize. We have not tested the radio for fear of possibly damaging the piece (the original electrical wiring remains intact) and, as always when dealing with very old electrical pieces, we recommend that the winning bidder first have it examined by a qualified electrician prior to plugging it in. The surface of the base is worn, otherwise in Excellent condition. High quality, very substantial, and ideal for display with striking art deco-style base. Height: 10 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,610.00
