1888 New York Giants Joseph Hall Cabinet Card (Six Hall of Famers)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,510.00
Extremely rare Joseph Hall team cabinet photograph (4.25 x 6.5 inches) featuring the World's Champion New York Giants of the National League. This is a particularly unusual photograph of the Giants team posed in front of the stadium grandstand, with players all looking to their right rather than looking forward toward the camera. This card is the third variation we have seen of this significant rarity, with many small changes to the photo, the most striking being that Mutrie is standing up, as opposed to being seated as he appears on the example we sold as Lot 160 in April 2005. Joseph Hall had more than one printing of team cabinet cards in 1888, resulting in variations relating to both the photographs and mounts. Some of these variations are still being discovered today when opportunity arises to allow study of newly found examples. Players are identified along the base of the mount. Included are Hall of Famers Tim Keefe, Roger Connor, John Montgomery Ward, Buck Ewing, Jim O'Rourke, and Mickey Welch. The back is blank on the offered example. Joseph Hall was the preeminent baseball photographer of the late 1880s and Joseph Hall cabinet cards are among the most desirable cards from that era. The extreme rarity of Joseph Hall team cabinets, the prominence of the Giants team, and the inclusion of so many Hall of Famers combine to make this card one of the best of all nineteenth-century team cards. This is a very attractive example of one of the key teams of the day from the Joseph Hall team cabinet series. The photograph is in Excellent to Mint condition with particularly exceptional contrast and clarity. The mount has some corner wear and edge chipping. Overall in Very Good condition. Dimensions: 6.5 x 4.25 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $5,510.00
