1919 A. G. Spalding Cigar Box Label
Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $232.00
Extremely rare full-color lithographic cigar box label featuring a portrait image of Hall of Famer A. G. Spalding. Manufactured in 1919 by the C. B. Henschel Mfg. Co. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Spalding greatly contributed to the development of professional baseball as a star pitcher, baseball executive, and as a sporting-goods entrepreneur. He was one of the game's most powerful and influential leaders for decades. It is not surprising that he was honored with his own brand of cigars, though they were apparently produced in very limited quantities as this is one of only three Spalding labels we have ever seen. It is especially ironic that Spalding should be identified as "The Father of The National Game" on this label, when it was Spalding who was most responsible for promoting the Doubleday Myth, and more so than any other individual was responsible for creating confusion about the origins of the game. Some very minor wrinkling, otherwise in Excellent condition. Dimensions: 10 x 6.5 inches. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$400. SOLD FOR $232.00
