1908 Boston Red Sox Postcard & 1907 Boston Invitation Opening Day
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,044.00
Two colorful and attractive souvenirs dating to the earliest days of Boston's American League franchise. The first is a large-format invitation (7.75 x 9.75 inches) to the club's home opener on April 16, 1907. The beautifully designed invitation is highlighted by the colorful embossed logo displayed along the top. The logo features the team name "Boston Americans" printed along a banner, above which is displayed a baseball motif flanked by two American flags and a bald eagle. The text, printed in grand calligraphic style, reads "The Boston American League Base Ball Club requests the honor of your presence at The Opening Game of the Season Tuesday afternoon April 16th 1907 at three o'clock Huntington Avenue Ball Grounds Boston." The fold-over invitation is in Ex to Ex-Mt condition. The second item is a rare "accordion style" postcard dating from 1908. The 5.5 x 3.5 inch postcard features three small photos on the front of John Taylor, Hugh McBreen and the Boston American League Grounds, respectively. To the left of the portraits is a circular die-cut baseball that reads "Boston Americans Red Sox." The die-cut baseball flips open to reveal twenty small individual photos (stacked accordion style) of the Boston Red Sox team members. Included among the players pictured are Cy Young, Ed Cicotte and Jake Stahl. The postcard displays a large diagonal crease running through the photo of John Taylor along which there is a clean separation. There has been some minor tape repair to the edge of two of the interior photos and the die-cut baseball also has a small tear. The postcard has never been mailed. Despite the imperfections, the postcard still displays well and retains an overall Very Good appearance. Total 2 items. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,044.00
