1902 Church and 1911 Collier Baseball Books

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,160.00

Two significant early baseball books, each classic early historical accounts of the game, and each also similar in that they are both profusely illustrated large-format volumes: 1) 1902 Seymour R. Church Baseball 1845-1871 Volume 1 : This oversized (14 x 11 inches) hard-bound volume of early baseball history, often referred to as "The Church Book," is highlighted by five beautiful full-color plates, as well as numerous black-and-white illustrations relating to baseball history. The book was self-published in 1902 by early baseball enthusiast Seymour Church and chronicles the history of baseball, with particular focus on the history of the game in California during the nineteenth century. This is one of the all-time classic early baseball books devoted to the history of baseball, with many photographs and a great deal of information which appear nowhere else. This book was intended to be the first of a series published by Church (it is "Volume 1") but a fire destroyed Church's business and his very substantial baseball collection in 1902, apparently derailing his plans for additional volumes. The spine has a one-inch tear at the top, the interior pages are slightly separating but are still very much intact, minor interior imperfections include small tears on nineteen interior pages (pg. 33 has an 8 inch tear), otherwise all pages are generally very clean, and all five color plates are complete and intact. Overall in Very Good condition. 2) 1911 P.F. Collier & Son The Book of Baseball - The National Game From The Earliest Days To The Present Season: This important and highly desirable oversized hard-bound volume (15.5 x 11 inches) is profusely illustrated, featuring many of the game's early stars and important figures. The cover of the Collier book is particularly susceptible to wear. The cover of this example exhibits some general wear, but far less than is usually seen with this volume. This is a very strong example in terms of condition for this book. The cover is overall in Very Good to Excellent condition; interior pages are Excellent to Mint. Both these classic books are worthy additions to any serious baseball library. Total 2 books. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,160.00
