1902 "Skins" and "Fats" Team Photographs
Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $232.00
In the "old days" many towns held special baseball games, usually on July 4th or at some other time of great festivities, arranged between teams comprised of the town's somewhat heftier residents and their weight-challenged counterparts. These games were always organized in the spirit of fun and never sought to demean any of the participants. Presented here are two cabinet photographs, taken in 1902, that capture the participants of one such game. The first photo pictures the fourteen members of the "Fats," while the other depicts eleven members of the "Skins." Each group is captured in a classic team pose, with numerous examples of period baseball equipment clearly visible in each photo. As one can clearly see, neither the "Fats" nor the "Skins" include anyone seriously obese or dangerously thin, and a good time was likely had by all. Each photo measures 8 x 6 inches and has been affixed to a larger cabinet mount (12 x 10 inches) that has the names of the participants in pencil along the bottom border. Unfortunately, the locale of the game is not noted. The photos are in Excellent to Mint condition, while the mounts are moderately soiled and have tack holes along the top and/or bottom borders. This is an extremely attractive and rare pair of vintage baseball photos commemorating one of baseball's most fascinating and long-forgotten local traditions. Total 2 photos. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$300. SOLD FOR $232.00
