1875-1940 Reach, Spalding, and Dewitt's Baseball and Football Guide Collection (102)

Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $2,900.00

Collection of 102 guides includes sixty-six Reach, Spalding and Dewitt's baseball guides spanning the years 1875 to 1939, including seventeen nineteenth-century baseball guides, plus thirty-six Spalding football guides spanning the years 1894 to 1940. These guides are filled with photographs and team composites, in addition to voluminous statistics and information about the previous season. Many consider these annuals to represent the best value in all of vintage baseball and football collecting. 1) Dewitt's Base Ball Guide (3): 1875 (a number of tears along the covers and spine), 1877 (Gd), 1878 (Gd). 2) Spalding's Official Baseball Guide (23): 1884 (both covers detached from spine but are taped together), 1885, 1886, 1887 (covers heavily soiled), 1888 (Gd), 1890 (front cover detached with tape repairs, back cover missing), 1891 (original covers are present but the guide has been rebound), 1892, 1904 (paper loss to front cover), 1906 (front cover detached and torn), 1912, 1915, 1917 (taped spine), 1920 (front cover slightly detached at the bottom), 1918 (piece missing from back cover), 1921, 1922, 1923, 1924 (front cover slightly detached at the top and sticker along top edge), 1925 (front and back cover detached but present), 1934, 1935 (Dizzy Dean on cover), 1938. 3) Reach's Official Baseball Guide (40): 1889 (front cover detached and back cover missing), 1890 (back cover detached at spine but still intact), 1891 (back cover detached at spine but still intact), 1893 (spine completely torn away but covers still intact), 1897 (both covers detached from spine but are taped together), 1898 (both covers detached), 1900 (back cover detached but taped to the spine and front cover), 1901 (front cover slightly detached and piece missing), 1902 (front cover slightly detached from spine at the bottom), 1903, 1904, 1905, 1906 (both covers detached), 1908, 1909, 1910, 1911 (spine taped), 1912 (front cover detached at top of spine), 1913, 1914, 1915 (front cover detached but taped to spine), 1916 (back cover detached), 1917 (taped spine), 1918 (taped spine), 1919, 1921 (tape and paper loss on cover), 1923 (torn cover), 1924 (tape and paper loss along spine), 1925 (back cover missing), 1927 (both covers detached but taped together), 1928 (both covers detached but taped together), 1929 (piece of tape on cover), 1930 (both covers detached but taped together), 1933 (both covers detached but taped together), 1934 (back cover missing), 1935 (Gehrig cover), 1936 (back cover detached), 1937 (Gehrig cover), 1938 (Gehringer cover), 1939. The cover stock of pre-1902 Reach guides is far more brittle than in later years, and these early covers are highly susceptible to damage. 4) Spalding's Official Football Guide (36): 1894 (tape along the spine and moisture stains throughout the interior pages), 1896 (both covers missing), 1897 (moisture stains on the covers and throughout several interior pages), 1899, 1902 (taped spine), 1903 (taped spine), 1904 (back cover missing), 1908 (both covers detached), 1909 (back cover missing, tape on spine), 1910, 1911, 1912, 1913 (both covers detached), 1914, 1915 (tape on spine), 1916, 1917 (both covers are detached), 1918 (taped spine and front cover), 1919, 1920 (tape on spine), 1921 (front cover detached, tape on spine), 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925 (front cover detached, tape on spine), 1926, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1938, 1939, 1940. Most guides in this collection do have some condition flaws, mostly to the covers (as is often the case with early guides), but all are complete and intact, and present far better than their technically accurate overall grade of Good to Very Good condition (with a few better, and with the seventeen pre-1900 guides tending to be very slightly lesser, in overall Good condition). This is an impressive collection which represents the foundation for an outstanding and very difficult to assemble reference library. Total 102 guides. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $2,900.00
