1912 Cap Anson Cabinet Cards (2) and Theatrical Broadside in Framed Display

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,044.00

Although Cap Anson was perhaps the greatest ballplayer of his era, his talents were not strictly confined to the diamond. Both during and after his playing career, Anson took to the stage, appearing in plays and, late in life, a one-man show. This impressive framed display piece commemorates the latter and is comprised of two large cabinet photos of the Hall of Fame great as well as the theatrical advertising broadside in which the photographic images are featured. Each of the similar, yet distinct, formal professional studio portraits (5 x 7.25 inches) capture Anson at the age of sixty. The photographer's credit ("White - New York") appears on each photo and mount (7 x 10.75 inches). The offered photographic images appear, respectively, in the upper right and left corners of the accompanying broadside. Titled "Base Hits! - Comments of the Critics Dramatic and Sporting," the broadside (15.5 x 15.5 inches) provides a biography of the Hall of Famer as well as numerous laudatory newspaper reviews of his one-man show. Also featured within the broadside is a photo of Anson as a player, below which reads "Captain Adrian C. Anson - A better actor than any ball player - A better ball player than any actor." One of the cabinet photos is in Excellent condition; the other has some light foxing on the mount in the upper left and is otherwise in Excellent condition. The broadside, printed on thin paper stock, has a light horizontal fold and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. It is very interesting to note that these two cabinet cards and the broadside originate directly from the Anson family. They were among the materials sold by the Anson family in the 1980s. The photos and broadside have been beautifully mounted and framed together to total dimensions of 22 x 33 inches. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,044.00
