1892 New York Giants (vs. Boston) Yearbook-Style Baseball Program
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $2,088.00
This extremely rare and substantial 24-page yearbook-style program, commemorating a game between the New York and the Boston Nationals, features interior portrait photographs and brief biographies of the following eleven New York Giants team members: Amos Rusie, Buck Ewing, James O'Rourke, Mike Tiernan, Charles Bassett, W. B. Fuller, John Boyle, D. F. Lyons, Charles King, George Gore and manager P. T. Powers. The preprinted interior scorecard lists the lineups for both New York and Boston and includes Hall of Famers Buck Ewing and James O'Rourke for New York, and Hugh Duffy, Mike "King" Kelly, and Kid Nichols for Boston. The program has been neatly scored in pencil and records a 9-7 win for Boston. The 1892 season marked King Kelly's second to last season in the Major Leagues. One of the greatest and most flamboyant players of his era, Kelly helped lead both Chicago and Boston to League titles during his sixteen-year career. Unfortunately, his life came to a tragic end in 1894 as he succumbed to pneumonia at the age of thirty-seven. Programs from the 1890s are generally very rare compared to programs from the 1880s. This is an extraordinary example both in terms of rarity and design. The cover has an insignificant tear in the lower right, the center page is detached from the spine, the program has two sets of clean staple holes which go through the program, but these minor flaws are of no consequence to the program's otherwise overall Excellent appearance. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $2,088.00
