Extraordinary Nineteenth-Century Baseball Lithograph Display
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $696.00
By the late nineteenth century, baseball was well established as our national pastime. Not surprisingly, as the popularity of the game increased so did its appearance in many of the era's decorative arts. Offered is one magnificent example in the form of a large (15 x 27 inches) and very colorful lithograph display produced in 1891 by the "Gast Lith. & Eng. Co. NY." The colorful pastoral scene pictures a young boy bedecked in the style of the times sitting in a verdant field. A bat is held in his hand, while a baseball sits at his feet. Both the date and the name of the printer appear in the lower left. This is an extraordinary art print of the highest production values, obviously made at great expense specifically for prominent display in fine homes. The lithograph has a few extremely minor surface wrinkles which are of no consequence whatsoever, barely visible even when viewed upon close inspection at the proper angle in strong light, and mentioned strictly for the sake of extreme accuracy. In spectacular Excellent to Mint condition. This is the only example of this magnificent nineteenth-century display we have ever seen. Beautifully presented in an ornate wooden frame measuring 19 x 31 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $696.00
