Circa 1890s Baseball Candy Container/Doll
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,740.00
Rarely have form and function combined so harmoniously as in this extraordinary nineteenth-century figural baseball candy container that is also designed to function as a doll. This is one of the classics of nineteeth-century baseball figural pieces, and one which is almost never encountered in the baseball world. This is an item that is highly prized in the general Americana and antique collecting fields, and, while very well known, is almost always found only with advanced collectors in those fields. Most likely German in origin, the seven-inch-tall doll separates at the waist to reveal a small cylindrical compartment intended for the storage of candy. The entire figure is made of composition and has been dressed in a cloth baseball uniform of the period, complete with tie and belt. The wooden bat the ballplayer is holding is a modern replica of the original. These bats are usually lost; however, it must be noted that this bat has been specially crafted specifically for this piece, even to the point of the wood having been "distressed" to match the age of the doll. These figural candy containers, which hold extraordinary appeal not only for baseball collectors but for doll and advertising specialists as well, are extremely rare to find in presentable condition worthy of display in part because of their extremely fragile nature. The offered example is exceptional, displaying only a single expertly repaired break to the right leg (barely noticeable, except upon close inspection); it is otherwise in Excellent condition, with nearly all of the original paint still intact. The cloth uniform displays moderate wear commensurate with its age, including light fraying to the tie. This is an extremely striking and very rarely offered high-quality nineteenth-century figural baseball display piece. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,740.00
