Circa 1889 "Big Run" Cigar Box with Buck Ewing
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $580.00
Circa 1889 "Big Run" wooden cigar box opens to reveal a colorful interior label with six portrait images from the N28 and N29 Allen & Ginter World Champions sets, surrounding a box of "Big Run" cigars. The portrait illustrations are those of Buck Ewing (Base Ball Players, N29), Buffalo Bill Cody (Rifle Shooting, N28), Percy Stone (Cyclists, N29), L. E. Myers (Pedestrians-Runners, N29), James Albert (Pedestrians-Go-As-You-Please, N29), and J. Schaefer (Billiard Players, N28). Pictured below are illustrated vignettes of six athletic events: baseball, running, cycling, sailing, billiards and horse racing. The remnants of an exterior side label display similar designs. Despite the fact that Allen & Ginter tobacco card images are used on both the exterior and interior labels, these cigars were produced by Geo. Brandau, as noted by the exterior label on the bottom of the box. Also recorded on the bottom of the box are both the factory number (1206) and location (New York). "Big Run" is stamped on the top of the lid. We have seen the colorful "Big Run" label many times over the years, but always as a sample label. We have seen only one other example of this rare label on a wooden cigar box before. The exterior of the box (7.5 x 4.5 x 1.5 inches) is heavily worn and is overall in Very Good condition. The interior label remains completely intact, has been well protected in the confines of the box, and is in Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $580.00
