1888 Hygiene For Base Ball Players Presentation Copy Inscribed To Henry Chadwick

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,044.00

Extraordinary hardcover presentation copy of Hygiene For Base Ball Players by A. H. P. Leuf, personally signed by the author to Henry Chadwick. The author has inscribed the book in black ink along the front fly leaf, "Presentation Copy to Mr. Henry Chadwick from his admirer - A. H. P. Leuf - July 10th, 1888." The red-leather binding bears Chadwick's full name stamped on the cover in gilt. Even if this volume were not inscribed, the author's esteem for Chadwick is eloquently expressed on the book's dedication page (to Chadwick), in which he glowingly refers to him as "The Father of Base Ball." Published in 1888 by A. J. Reach & Co., Philadelphia. This is the ultimate example of one of the nineteenth century's most noted baseball books, the first of its kind, which within its 142 pages covers all subjects and treatments related to the health of ballplayers, from the effects of alcohol and tobacco to the physiology and stress on the arm from throwing a curve ball. Also included are several pages of advertisements for all types of Reach baseball products. This is a rare and very interesting baseball work, featuring numerous diagrams and engravings, which was once a part of Henry Chadwick's personal library. The red-leather binding displays light wear. (Note: this book was issued to the public only in soft cover.) The spine is tight and all pages are clean and bright. Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,044.00
