1887 Boston (vs. New York) N172 Old Judge Advertising Scorecard
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,392.00
Two-page fold-over scorecard features a colorful image of a professional ballplayer in uniform on the cover with the caption "Good Form" printed below. This rare and attractive program style is particularly significant, both to program and card collectors. Surrounding the cover image is advertising for the then-recently released baseball card series issued by "Old Judge Cigarettes." The text of the advertising, which runs across the top and bottom as well as both sides, boldly announces "Photographs of $10,000 Kelly, the Boston Team and all the Professional Ball Players Packed In Every Package of Old Judge Cigarettes." While many scorecards of the era feature caricature likenesses of generic ballplayers, this program features a very realistic study of a ballplayer at bat. The scorecard is from an 1887 National League game between Boston and New York, two of the powerhouse teams of the era. The preprinted lineups include Hall of Famers Mike "King" Kelly and Hoss Radbourn for Boston and Buck Ewing, John Ward, Roger Connor, Jim O'Rourke and Mickey Welch for New York. The program, printed by John B. Sage of Buffalo, N.Y., is unscored. On the back cover are advertisements for several local Boston establishments including Wright & Ditson Sporting Goods. This program is slightly larger than most scorecards of the era. Dimensions: 7.25 x 8.75 inches. There is a light stain in the upper right corner of the front cover, which is barely visible, and in the upper left corner of the back cover, and a light horizontal crease from being folded long ago, but still bright and clean, and otherwise in Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,392.00
