1884 Brooklyn Base Ball Club Scorecard Collection (3)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $928.00

Collection of three 1884 Brooklyn programs plus two additional unusual advertising scorecards. Dating from the 1884 season, each of the three attractive fold-over scorecards was issued by Brooklyn's entry in the American Association. The team name is featured on two of the covers, while the third features a cartoon silhouette of a ballplayer. The sections display the preprinted lineups for both Brooklyn and its respective opponents (Louisville, Detroit and Boston). The date of the game is preprinted as part of the scorecard on two of the scorecards (April 23, 1884 and April 29, 1884), while the third has the date "June 5, 1884" neatly written in pencil. All of the scorecards (4 x 6 inches, folded) have been very elaborately and neatly scored and include various additional pencil notations on the interior, with one also displaying the names of the teams (Boston and Brooklyn) and the score of the game on the front cover. The Boston scorecard is in Excellent condition, while the other two grade Vg-Ex, with some slight separation along the spine. Included with the collection are two generic promotional scorecards, each comprised of a single sheet. The first (4.25 x 7 inches) dates from the 1870s and was issued by the W. B. Carr & Co., a Brooklyn sporting goods firm. The front displays the company's advertisement for their "New Professional Dead Ball." Vg-Ex. The second (5.25 x 9.25 inches) dates from circa 1908 and was issued by Spalding. An advertisement for the company's "Official National League" ball decorates the front side. Vg, with a few minor tears. These scorecards originate from an extraordinary collection of Brooklyn programs which surfaced many years ago. Total 5 scorecards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500.
