1866 and 1867 Haney's Baseball Reference Guides

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $696.00

Two extremely rare Haney baseball guides dating from 1866 and 1867, respectively. 1) The 1866 edition, titled The Base Ball Player's Book of Reference, is the first edition of the Haney's guide. The interior pages provide the rules of the game as well as a diagram of the field. Published by J. C. Haney & Co., New York, 1866. An vintage ink inscription appears on the front end page and a few pencil notations (some of which have been erased) are written on the title page. The 76-page book has a plain, brown cloth cover. It is possible that this cover is not original to the book; however, the extreme rarity of this guide is such that we have no other examples to compare. The volume is in Good to Very Good condition, with a small tear to the cover, minor loss of cover binding along the spine, and minor staining to a few interior pages. 2) The 1867 edition features an illustration of players consulting the guide on the cover, above which is the title, Haney's Base Ball Book of Reference. The 1867 edition is longer than the 1866 edition, with 139 pages, and features numerous illustrations throughout. Published by J. C. Haney & Co., New York, 1867. The soft-cover book is in Good to Very Good condition with cover imperfections including minor edge chipping, and minor loss of cover binding along the spine. Total: 2 guides. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $696.00
