Circa 1880 "Hayward & Halvenstrite's Parlor Game of Base Ball"
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $812.00
Extraordinary early baseball board game rarity. This is the first example we have ever seen of this game. Impressive both in size and visual appeal, this rare early baseball board game features a color lithograph label (7.75 x 10.25 inches) featuring a baseball scene affixed to the box cover. The label features a game-in-progress scene as well as the title, "Hayward & Halvenstrite's Parlor Game of Base Ball." Although no year of manufacture is listed, the position of the third baseman in foul territory (not wearing a glove) helps to date it to the 1870s or early 1880s. The game board is framed in wood and displays a baseball diamond design. Eleven small spinners (incorporated into the game board design) help determine the "action" on the field. A score board is displayed along the bottom. Both the box lid and game board note the fact that the patent for the game has been applied for. The game (13.75 x 21.5 inches) is in overall Good condition and does not include any other playing pieces. Some chipping to the label; however, the central image of the cover label remains free of any significant defects. This is a tremendous rarity which despite general wear has a tremendous presence and display value. We don't expect to see another example of this game soon. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
