1887 N184 W. S. Kimball Champions Near-Complete Set (36 of 50 cards)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,190.00
1887 N184 W. S. Kimball Champions near-complete set of 36 different cards (of 50), including two of the four baseball players (Burch and Henderson, both grade Fr-Gd), and boxing Hall of Famer John L. Sullivan (Fr-Gd). Missing just the following fourteen cards for completion: Cardiff, Darling, Dempsey, Hanlan, Heins, Jordan, Kane, Morsler, J. Murphy, Oakley, O'Neil, Wallace, Wessels, and Wood. Seven cards have been graded and encapsulated by SGC as follows: L. Smith (NM 84), Warren (EX 60), Beardsley (VG/EX 50), Casey (VG/EX 50), Ferrell (VG/EX 50), George (VG/EX 50), and J. Smith (GOOD 30). Without reference to the backs (many of which have small areas of surface paper loss in the corners from being removed from a scrapbook long ago) the balance of the set ranges in grade from Fair to Very Good, averaging Gd-Vg overall. Kimballs are considered by many to be one of the most beautiful of all of the nineteenth-century tobacco issues. The set features champions and stars of the day from a wide variety of sports. Although the baseball players featured in the set are not Hall of Famers, each was a very popular star. Although in mixed grade, this is still a very pleasing partial set of this rare and classic nineteenth-century tobacco issue. Total 36 cards (of 50). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $3,190.00
