Circa 1912 Roly Poly Tobacco Tin Collection (10) Including Rare Red Indian Mammy

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,770.00

It's a Roly Poly world! Offered is a complete set of six circa 1912 Roly Poly tobacco tins issued by the American Tobacco Company, as well as four duplicates (to allow for the display of the set as well as all four different advertising backs at the same time). These illustrated Roly Poly tins, so named for their bulbous shape, were designed to portray six stereotypical people from the era. These characters are formally titled Mammy, Singing Waiter, Satisfied Customer, Dutchman, Scotland Yard, and Storekeeper. Four different brands of tobacco were distributed in these tins: Mayo's, Dixie Queen, Red Indian, and U.S. Marine, with each tin holding approximately a pound of tobacco. Mayo's and Dixie Queen tobacco were distributed in all six different style tins, while Red Indian and U.S. Marine were issued in only three different character tins. The brand of tobacco which was housed by these tins is displayed upon the reverse and, in the case of Mammy and Dutchman, also along the front (an illustration of the tobacco package is seen protruding from each figure's front pocket). These tins are very rare today and should not be confused with the many reproductions offered in the 1980s by Bristol Ware. These are classics in the fields of tobacco and Americana advertising collectibles. Offered here (including the brand of tobacco and the overall condition grade for each expressed as a number on a scale of "1" to "10") are the following ten tins: 1) Mammy - Red Indian Tobacco. This is the rarest and by far the most desirable of all Roly Poly tobacco tins. This example is also the highlight of this collection in terms of condition and value. This is an extraordinary high-grade example ("8"). 2) Mammy-U.S. Marine ("4"). 3) Storekeeper-Mayo's ("6"). 4) Storekeeper-Mayo's ("5"). 5) Singing Waiter-Mayo's ("7"). 6) Singing Waiter-Dixie Queen ("4"). 7) Singing Waiter-Red Indian ("3"). 8) Scotland Yard-Mayo's ("6"). 9) Dutchman-Mayo's ("3"). 10) Satisfied Customer-Mayo's ("6/7"). Total: 10 tins. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,770.00
