Circa 1910 Cy Young Cigar Box
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,320.00
This extremely rare and attractive Cy Young cigar box, manufactured in Young's home state of Ohio by the W. E. Vail Co., features a black and white portrait image of the legendary Hall of Fame pitcher surrounded by a colorful design on the interior label. We have previously seen only one example of this Cy Young cigar label design in the form of a detached lid. This is the first example of a complete box we have ever seen. The interior label features the identification "Cy Young" displayed above his portrait. Below his image the label reads "By Permission, Cy Young" and "Mild Havana Blend." The exterior of the box features Young's name stamped in black along the top and front side. The paper label surrounding the box, both along the top and bottom border, repeatedly intersperses Young's name with that of the manufacturer, "W. E. V. Co. Bethesda, Ohio." The interior label is bright and clean, with just a hint of foxing, and is in overall Excellent condition. There is some minor warping to the top lid as is often the case with wooden cigar boxes. The exterior of the box (8.5 x 5.5 x 2.5 inches) displays moderate wear typical of an early cigar box, including a few abrasions and tears to the exterior labels. Overall in Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,320.00
