Ted Williams and Ted Williams forgeries by John Henry Williams Signed Sheet
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $696.00
Unique signed sheet bearing the signature of Ted Williams and two attempted forgeries of his signature by his son, John Henry Williams. This unlined sheet of white paper was obtained from a real estate agent in Massachusetts in 1989. At the time, the agent had met with Williams and his son to discuss a piece of property that Ted was interested in purchasing. During that meeting, Ted used this sheet to jot down figures and dimensions of the property in question. He then later signed the sheet in blue Sharpie ( "10") for the agent. According to the agent, after Ted signed the sheet, John Henry boasted that he could duplicate his father's signature, and to prove his point he added two more "Ted Williams" signatures to the sheet. Obviously, John Henry needed a little more practice, as the two signatures he penned, while similar, would never pass for authentic. Ted Williams signatures. The significance of this piece lies in the fact that many people over the years have accused John Henry of forging his father's signatures on memorabilia and selling them as authentic Ted Williams signed pieces. The subject of forgery on John Henry's part became a public sensation in 2003 upon the occasion of Ted's death. In a bizarre turn of events, John Henry and his sister ignored Williams' will, wherein he stated that he wanted to be cremated, and instead had his body cryogenically frozen. They did so because they said that Ted, shortly before his passing, requested that his body be frozen after death. To prove it, they produced a brief note, signed by Ted, John Henry, and his daughter, specifically stating that request. At the time, many, including Williams' other daughter, felt that signed statement from Ted was a forgery produced by John Henry. While it has never been determined with certainty whether or not John Henry forged Ted's signature on that document, this sheet certainly proves that he felt himself capable of doing so. Tragically, shortly after Ted's death, John Henry also passed away (due to leukemia) at the age of thirty-five. The sheet (8 x 5 inches) bears a horizontal and two vertical fold lines and is in Excellent condition overall. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $696.00
