Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe Artwork Signed by Joe DiMaggio

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,204.00

Unique Joe DiMaggio/Marilyn Monroe artwork signed by Joe DiMaggio. This attractive painting, created by noted sports artist Wayne Prokopiak, features a montage of images relating to the life of Joe DiMaggio. Although DiMaggio is pictured in a number of vignettes, including one with both his brothers, Dom and Vince, and another with Ted Williams, the piece is dominated by the large central image of the famed Yankee Clipper standing next to his former wife, Marilyn Monroe. DiMaggio has signed the piece in blue Sharpie (grading "9") along the base. Any Joe DiMaggio signed item relating to, or featuring the likeness of Marilyn Monroe is extremely rare, as DiMaggio vehemently refused to sign such pieces, even at paid signing shows. Actually, this piece was no exception, and the manner in which it was signed was due to the use of subterfuge on the part of our consignor. DiMaggio originally signed only an exposed blank section of canvas and the specially commissioned painting was then later executed around his signature. It was in that manner that a number of such items came to be signed by DiMaggio over the years (he eventually caught on to such tricks and was later very wary about signing blank pieces). Signed and dated (1993) by the artist in the lower right. Wayne Prokopiak, who has created many memorable sports lithographs, is best known today for his work with the Boxing Hall of Fame. Prokopiak was the official artist for the Hall during the 1990s and was annually commissioned to create the cover illustrations for its Hall of Fame induction programs. During that period he also developed a close working relationship with our consignor, who commissioned Prokopiak to produce a number of significant baseball artworks for his substantial personal collection, which are consigned to this auction. The painting measures 15 x 20 inches and has been framed to slightly larger dimensions. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $500.
