Extraordinary Baseball Hall of Famer-Signed Check Collection (60)

Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $3,190.00

Collection of checks signed by fifty-six different members of the Baseball Hall of Fame (plus four duplicates for a total of sixty checks). This is an incredible collection which has been assembled with great care by a very advanced and dedicated collector. Full canceled checks of Hall of Famers have always been a very popular area of collecting, but few collections have ever been assembled featuring so many different Hall of Famers. For some players, even many whose signatures are not extremely valuable, personal checks are rare, and in some cases not available at all. This is the largest collection of Hall of Famer personal checks we have ever seen or offered, though we do know of more advanced collections which include all of these and many additional rarities. Of special note, this collection does not include most of the more expensive "commodity" checks such as Ruth, Wagner, and Cobb, that are frequently available but are relatively expensive. These missing checks could easily be added to this collection, which could serve as an outstanding foundation in the assembly of a complete collection of all possible Hall of Fame checks. Unless otherwise noted, all of the checks are personal checks (some include the preprinted name of a spouse as well) and all have been signed in either blue or black ink (with signatures each grading "9" or "10"). The fifty-six Hall of Fame inductees represented here, along with the date for each check, are as follows: Aaron (9/24/79), Alston (1/5/60), Ashburn (9/26/93), Averill (5/8/78), Ernie Banks (1/2/98, made out to "Ron Santo" in the amount of $1), Barlick (3/22/93, made out to "cash" and also endorsed by Barlick on the reverse), Barrow (9/10/51, bank check), Boudreau (10/10/92), Carey (5/8/29, bank check), Carlton (9/11/95, business check), Cepeda (6/2/89), Chandler (10/20/88), Combs (6/4/54, bank check), Dandridge (3/3/84), Day (5/19/93, possible very slight trim along left border), Dickey (6/14/87), Joe DiMaggio (8/6/88), Doerr (9/30/89), Ferrell (2/15/86, made out to "cash" and also endorsed by Ferrell on the reverse), Ford (8/25/85), Frisch (8/22/71, made out to no one and also endorsed by Frisch on the reverse), Grimes (4/20/46, bank check), Jesse Haines (10/22/71), William Harridge (11/12/69), Herman (1/13/92), Hooper (3/7/64), Hoyt (7/10/80), Hubbard (12/26/64, bank check), Hubbell (8/1/79), Irvin (4/1/86), Irvin (7/13/94, business check), Jenkins (11/20/89, bank check), Kell (1/6/92), G. Kelly (7/9/30, bank check), Kiner (10/31/87), Leonard (8/16/67, business check), Leonard (6/1/84, pre-stroke check), Leonard (6/2/88, post-stroke check), Lyons (12/2/69, bank check), Manush (10/4/66, bank check), McCovey (11/13/92), Musial (2/1/75, business check), Musial (3/19/87, with original mailing envelope to the Baseball Hobby News), Newhouser (12/16/83, made out to no one, also endorsed by Newhouser on the reverse), Palmer (12/6/87), Perry (10/29/84), Reese (5/1/69), Rixey (1/26/18, bank check), Roberts (8/14/82), B. Robinson (2/13/90), Roush (8/30/71), Sewell (7/1/48, bank check), Sisler (5/11/67, bank check), Slaughter (4/6/79, bank check), Snider (7/14/87), Spahn (9/5/50, bank check, green ink), Terry (10/20/59, Jacksonville Baseball Company check), Weiss (6/18/69, also endorsed by Weiss on the reverse), Wheat (11/7/60, bank check), and Wilhelm (6/5/86, made out to "cash" and also endorsed by Wilhelm on the reverse). The majority of the checks measure approximately 6 x 2.75 inches, with some larger-format checks averaging 8.75 x 3 inches. All display normal bank cancellation stamps and/or holes. Approximately 30% of the checks have one or two light vertical folds, as is often the case with checks, and nine exhibit a few slight tears, otherwise the entire collection is in Excellent to Mint condition. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Total: 60 checks. Reserve $800. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,190.00
