1969 Thurman Munson Assigned to Yankees Contract
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $8,120.00
Presented is an extraordinary Munson document - the document which assigned Thurman Munson from the minor leagues to the New York Yankees. Dated April 12, 1969, this official one-page National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues contract reads "Official Notice of Disposition of Player's Contract and Services - To player Thurman L. Munson - You are hereby officially notified of the following disposition of your contract: (b) Your contract as of this date has been assigned outright to the New York Yankees, Inc. Club of the American League." It is flawlessly signed at the bottom "Thurman L. Munson" ("10") in black ink. After signing with the Yankees in 1968 as their number-one pick in the amateur free-agent draft, Munson played fewer than 100 games in the minor leagues with the Binghamton Triplets and Syracuse before being called up to play with the Yankees in 1969. This is the document that called Munson up to the majors, and represents one of the most significant Munson signed documents relating to his playing career that could possibly exist. Thurman Munson was the first catcher to ever win the American League Rookie of the Year Award, in 1970. (He played only twenty-six games with the Yankees in 1969, preserving his status as a rookie in 1970.) Munson achieved many other honors during his distinguished eleven-year career that was tragically cut short by a fatal plane crash. The Yankees have honored Munson with the retirement of his number "15." The great force of his personality was appreciated by his teammates, who bestowed upon him the honor of captain, as well as by fans who honor his memory to this day. This is a very important signed document dating from the dawn of Munson's glorious career as a Yankee. The document has two normal horizontal mailing fold lines. Excellent to Mint condition. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $8,120.00
