1955 Brooklyn Dodgers Team-Signed Game-Used Ball From Don Newcombe's One-Hitter On May 10th
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,480.00
This official National League (Giles) ball from the last out in Don Newcombe's one-hit victory over Chicago on May 10, 1955 is signed in blue ink by twenty-four members of the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers. The signatures on the ball are those of Robinson ("8/9"), Campanella ("9"), Reese, Snider, Alston (sweet spot), Herman (coach), Zimmer, Howell, Amoros, Podres, Black, Walker, Shuba, Gilliam, Kellert, Hughes, Pitler (coach), Erskine, Roebuck, Hodges, Labine, Newcombe, Furillo and Meyer. In addition to the authentic Billy Herman signature on a side panel, there is a second secretarial example on the sweet spot above Alston's signature. The signatures are all fairly uniform in strength, grading "8/9" on average. A vintage black ink notation on a side panel makes note of the ball's unique provenance, "Last Ball-1 Hitter vs. Chicago, May-10-55." Don Newcombe did indeed toss a one-hitter on that date, defeating the Cubs 3-0 enroute to the second of his eventual three twenty-win seasons. The Dodgers, of course, went on to even greater glory that season by defeating the Yankees in the World Series, thus marking the club's only World Championship while in Brooklyn. The condition of the ball's surface supports its game-used status, as it is lightly soiled and displays a few light abrasions and two tiny areas of minor discoloration. Very Good to Excellent condition. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,480.00
