1951/52 New York Yankees Team-Signed Baseball with Marilyn Monroe
Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $11,020.00
Presented is a remarkable Official American League (Harridge) baseball signed in blue and black ink by twenty-six members of the 1951 World Champion New York Yankees, and also by the world's most legendary goddess of the silver screen, Marilyn Monroe. Joe DiMaggio has signed the sweet spot (with an area of flaking, "5") and Marilyn Monroe ("8") has signed just beneath the "Yankee Clipper" also on the sweet spot. The other Yankee signatures are Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Johnny Mize, Gene Woodling, Allie Reynolds, Casey Stengel (signed twice with both being clubhouse signatures which was then a common practice), Billy Martin, John Sain, Vic Raschi, Charlie Silvera, Gil McDougald, Bob Kuzava, Jim McDonald, Joe Collins, Irv Noren, Johnny Schmitz, Bill Miller, Joe Ostrowski, Hank Bauer, Tom Gorman, Ed Lopat, Ralph Houk, Jim Brideweser, and Loren Babe. This ball may very well have been signed during early 1952 as five players (McDonald, Schmitz, Miller, Gorman, and Babe) did not appear on the Yankees roster until the following season. It is always the case in our experience that a Yankee team ball signed by both Mantle and DiMaggio dates from precisely 1951, as that was the only year in which their careers overlapped, but the unique combination of player signatures on this ball suggests that it was in fact signed in 1952. Further research indicates that Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio first met and became a couple very early in 1952, and this fact is also consistent with our dating the ball to 1952. The signatures range from a "6" to an "8" in grade, averaging a "7" overall. The ball is lightly toned with a thin layer of protective shellac and light but legible manufacturing stampings. Vg-Ex/Ex condition. This is a very interesting and unique signed Yankees team ball from the early 1950s, and quite possibly the only one in existence from this era featuring the signatures of both Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe together on the same ball, dating from the earliest days of their legendary romance. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $11,020.00
