1887 N284 Buchner Gold Coin Tobacco Cards Collection (35)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $7,540.00

Collection of thirty-five Buchner Gold Coin Tobacco cards (thirty-four ballplayers and one jockey) with seven Hall of Famers including Roger Connor (hands face level), Buck Ewing (hands at neck), Ned Hanlon, two Jim O'Rourke (hands cupped), Old Hoss Radbourn (hands at chest), and Sam Thompson (hand at belt). The fronts of the cards range from Vg to Excellent condition (two cards slightly lesser, Good). Most but not all of these cards have some glue staining (in many cases very minor) on the reverse from long ago being stored in a scrapbook and carefully removed. Twenty of the thirty-five cards also have varying degrees of (mostly minor) paper loss on their reverses. Four of the Hall of Famers (Radbourne, Connor, Ewing, and O'Rourke) have no paper loss on their reverses. This is a very substantial group of these scarce and very colorful nineteenth-century tobacco cards. Buchners are unusual in that they feature generic rather than actual likeness illustrations of the players identified. The twenty-seven non-Hall of Famers in the collection are Andrews (hands waist high), Bennett, Burdock, Bushong, Crane, Dorgan (right field), Gillespie (batter), Hart, Healy, Kennedy, Latham, Manning, McCormick, Mulvey (hands above head), Myers, O'Brien, Phillips, Purchell, D. Richardson (foot on base), H. Richardson (right hand above head), Seery, Shomberg (Schomberg), Welch, White, J. Whitney (Wash.), Wood (hands at right shoulder), Wood (stealing base). We have selected eight cards to be graded by SGC: Connor/hands face level (GOOD 30), Dorgan/right field (GOOD 30), Ewing/hands at neck (FAIR 20), Myers (GOOD 30), O'Brien (GOOD 30), Radbourn/hands above waist (GOOD 30), White (GOOD 30), and Wood/stealing base (GOOD 30). This collection has been in the same family for decades and is being offered for the first time ever in this auction. This is a very attractive group of these early classics including seven Hall of Famers. Total 35 cards (34 ballplayers and 1 jockey). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $7,540.00
