1887-1889 N172 Old Judge Collection Including Kid Nichols (3)
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $3,190.00
Attractive group of three N172 Old Judge cards, highlighted by Hall of Famer Charles "Kid" Nichols (pitching, right hand forward pose) with Omaha in 1889 just prior to joining the Boston Nationals the following year. Nichols is, without question, one of the rarest of all N172 Hall of Famers. All 1889 copyright dated Old Judges are very scarce, and are also often found with poor photo quality. Nichols was only issued in 1889, no doubt contributing to its great rarity, and is with good reason considered to be one of the most difficult to find of all Old Judge Hall of Famers. Nichols is bright and clean, with no creases, and particularly strong contrast. The photo is so clear that "Omaha" can even be perfectly read across his striped uniform. The card is centered to the right border with a slight natural miscut, and is otherwise in Vg-Ex to Excellent condition. The other two N172 Old Judges included are Dorgan (Vg) and Tony Mullane, one of the great stars of the era still not yet inducted into the Hall of Fame (Ex). Mullane had five consecutive thirty-win seasons (1882 to 1887) and recorded a lifetime 284 victories. This is an impressive trio of N172s, including two the era's top pitching stars, highlighted by Charles "Kid" Nichols, one of the rarest of all Hall of Famers in the set. Total 3 cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $3,190.00
