Nineteenth-Century Generic Baseball Tobacco Card Collection (33)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $2,610.00
Fantastic assortment of thirty-three mostly nineteenth-century generic baseball tobacco cards issued by several manufacturers including Duke, Goodwin and Mayo. Also included are three circa 1890 generic baseball scorecards and a very unusual Goodwin advertising piece. While tobacco cards featuring specific ballplayers are very popular, less well known are cards from various equally rare nonsport sets which have cards with a baseball theme. The balance of this collection is comprised of an assortment of these cards. 1) Circa 1880s Generic Baseball Novelty Scorecards (3 of the 4 in the set): Each featuring a generic baseball full color illustration. Two of the three have been separated at the spine, the third is intact. Excellent condition. 2) N118 1888 Duke "Jokes": "Off His Base" (Vg). 3) Circa 1888 Goodwin foldover advertisement (6.5 x 5 inches) for Old Judge Tobacco. Very rare and striking. Vg-Ex. 4) 1888 N228 Kinney "Novelties" Round Card: Thick stock with no border variation designed like a baseball with a woman baseball player imaged. Diameter: 1 5/8 inches. Nr/Mt. 5) 1888 N88 Duke "Terrors of America" (9 cards, one card is a slightly larger N88a type): This issue depicts colorful illustrations of American youngsters playing various outdoor games including baseball. Three cards grade Vg-Ex to Ex, and six Fr to Vg. 6) 1888 N136 Duke "Terrors of America" (3 cards): Issued with Honest Long Cut tobacco products and measuring 2.5 x 4.25 inches. These cards are designed like their smaller counterparts (not unlike the relationship between N29 and N43 Allen & Ginter) with a larger decorative background design. Very Good condition overall. 7) 1889 N165 Goodwin "Games and Sports Series" (5 cards): Five cards from this popular mixed sports issue including all four baseball cards in the set (plus one duplicate - catcher). One card grades Ex-Mt, one Ex, two Vg-Ex, and one Fair (back damage). One of the few pre-1900 full color sports related tobacco sets. This set features generic ballplayer scenes with portraits of women ballplayers in the foreground and is all the more distinctive in that the illustrations are not comical. 8) 1910 T203 Mayo's Baseball Comics Partial Set (12 of 25 cards in the set): Partial set of this amusing and very scarce 1910-era tobacco issue featuring comical illustrations depicting various baseball phrases and terminology. Four cards grade Vg-Ex to Ex, and eight range from Fr to Gd. 9) Circa 1888 N360 issued with Little Rhody Cut Plug Tobacco. Two cards each with an image of a woman in a baseball pose (batting and pitching). One features a schedule on the back and the other has advertisement for Little Rhody Cut Plug Tobacco. These are particularly rare and substantial. Both grade Excellent overall. Total 37 items. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $2,610.00
