1921 E121 American Caramel (Series of 80) Babe Ruth PSA NM 7
Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $23,200.00
Graded NM 7 by PSA. Highest-graded example. Presented is an absolutely stunning high-grade E121 American Caramel card of Babe Ruth. This is one of the premier early Ruth cards and one of the very few dating from the early 1920s. As suggested by its extraordinarily high grade (which is all the more extraordinary for a caramel card), this card is a gem. Perfectly clean front and back. Four square corners. The clean, white borders of this card frame a virtually flawless, bold image which is centered just a touch to the left, approximately 40/60. All four corners appear Mint at first glance; only close inspection with a high-powered lens reveals just a hint of wear at the extreme tips of the corners. The black text on the reverse is crisp, bold, and essentially flawless. It is interesting to note that the young, but already very celebrated, Ruth is pictured on this card in a Boston uniform, though he is appropriately identified below as a member of the New York Americans. "Boston" (mostly covered by Ruth's throwing arm) can be clearly seen across Ruth's chest upon close examination. In fact, this photograph of Ruth is the very same image which was used on Ruth's 1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy candy card. Apparently the American Caramel Company was going to print and did not have the time to pursue an updated image of Ruth with his new team. This is an exceptional and extremely high-grade example of this classic Babe Ruth card, worthy of the finest collection. It is unlikely that we will ever see another of this rare and significant card which will approach the condition of this extraordinary example. SMR value is $13,500. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $23,200.00
