1916 E135 Collins-McCarthy #82 Joe Jackson PSA EX-MT 6

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $17,400.00

Graded EX-MT 6 by PSA. Stunning example of one of the most important and elusive of all Joe Jackson cards. This is the highest-graded example of this significant rarity to date by PSA with none graded higher. The 1916 Collins-McCarthy cards are extremely difficult to find in high grade. Like their Boston Store counterparts, Collins-McCarthy cards of Jackson are rarely offered in any condition. Unlike the somewhat similar 1916 Sporting News card set, these cards were never issued as complete sets to the public. They were also produced on a slightly thinner stock that is far more susceptible to wear, and with a very glossy surface which is very prone to creasing. Collins-McCarthy cards are usually encountered one card at a time and in low grade. To find even a common card in Excellent to Mint condition is a challenge, let alone key card "Shoeless Joe" Jackson. The image on this card is a very unusual batting pose of Jackson which appears only in the Collins-McCarthy set (and related issues). Joe Jackson cards are few and far between in the card-collecting world. There are literally only a handful of different issues, including crudely produced strip-card issues. Even fewer picture him on the Chicago White Sox. Because Jackson is pictured in a Chicago uniform, with a great image, and with Black Betsy perched on his shoulder, no less, and the fact that this card is infinitely rarer and far more substantial than the smaller Sporting News issue, this is arguably the ultimate Joe Jackson baseball card. Bright, crisp, and perfectly clean front and back, with sharp corners, perfect contrast, and flawless glossy surface. This card has a Nr/Mt-Mt presence. The slight to-the-left centering is the only factor keeping this card from grading at least a very high-end PSA NM 7. This is an extraordinary world-class card worthy of the finest collection. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000. SOLD FOR $17,400.00
