1913 WG5 National Game Cards Near-Complete Set (46 of 52)
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $3,190.00
Collection of forty-six different of the fifty-two cards in the 1913 WG5 National Game set. Missing only six cards for completion (three commons: Konetchy, O'Toole, Stovall; and three "action" cards: batter swinging looking forward, play at plate umpire left, and play at plate umpire right). This set is identical in design to "Tom Barker Game" card set except for the different back design in red which features an advertising for "The National Game Baseball." Many great stars of the era are represented, including Joe Jackson (PSA GOOD 2, very harshly graded, great-looking card with a very light vertical crease; we grade this card a strong Vg), Ty Cobb (PSA EX 5), Honus Wagner (PSA VG 3), Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Nap Lajoie, Tris Speaker, Cy Young, and many more. Eighteen cards range from Vg-Ex to Ex condition (mostly Vg-Ex), thirty cards are Vg (includes a few which might technically grade Good). This is a very attractive set which has not been mishandled in any way, but has been played with as intended. These decks occasionally survive in perfect condition, with cards having never been used for play, and those decks sell for many thousands of dollars. This is a very consistent medium-grade set that represents an outstanding value compared to higher-grade sets of this issue, and, in our opinion, an outstanding value compared to all other 1910-era baseball card sets as well. The near-set is also accompanied by two non-photograph instruction cards. Total: 48 cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $3,190.00
