1911-1914 D304 Martens Bakery SGC Collection (2)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $20,880.00
The D304 set is usually associated with advertising for Brunners Bread, Butter Crust, and General Baking advertising on their reverses, but presented in this lot are two examples that each feature the extremely rare Martens Bakery advertising on their reverses: 1) J. Frank Baker. Graded NM/MT+ 92 by SGC. Crisp and clean, with bright colors, flawless registration, four razor-sharp corners, and virtually perfect centering. Perfectly clean reverse with bold black printing. 2) Frank Chance (no team). Graded EX 60 by SGC. Aside from the centering being a bit low, the card has very similar characteristics to the Baker. This is a very sharp-looking card with brilliant colors, flawless registration, and four square corners. Centered slightly to the right on the back. These are the first Martens Bakery backs that we can recall ever handling. Similar in design to tobacco and candy cards of the era, D304s measure slightly larger than T206s, at 1.75 x 2.5 inches, and while not "on the radar" of most collectors, they are actually considerably rarer than most 1910-era "E" and "T" card issues. The fronts feature very attractive full-color illustrations, each of which is unique to this issue. These are very rare and unusual cards of Hall of Famers Frank Baker and Frank Chance in outstanding high grade. Total 2 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $20,880.00
