M101-2 The Sporting News Collection of Four Including Joe Jackson
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,392.00
Collection of four M101-2 Sporting News supplements: Joe Jackson, Tris Speaker, Ban Johnson, and Joe Wood. This sepia-tone premium set was issued with the Sporting News between the years 1909 and 1913. Each premium was issued on only a single day and is dated in the upper right or left. Their method of issue and thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage. This lot is highlighted by Joe Jackson, the key to the M101-2 set and one of only a handful of vintage Joe Jackson issues. The Jackson premium was issued on March 23, 1911 and features the future Black Sox legend with the Cleveland Americans. Jackson has a very light and unobtrusive horizontal crease just below the neck. On the reverse is an ink notation reading "outfielder," and pencil notations "#66" (crossed out) and "64" (no doubt referring to a checklist number). While technically in Very Good condition, the condition flaws are minor and the premium has a strong Excellent appearance. The three remaining premiums grade as follows: Ban Johnson (Ex appearance, with very light creasing and a stain on reverse; M101-2 is one of the very few to include American League president and Hall of Famer Ban Johnson), Tris Speaker (Vg), and Joe Wood (Gd). Dimensions: approximately each 9.75 x 8 inches. Total: 4 supplements. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,392.00
